Are you an incoming freshman, or a high school student planning a campus tour? While the nearby and often recommended Teresa Caffe and Mediterra are perfectly good options, it’s worth it to go the extra mile (or in some cases, short drive) for the best food that Princeton has to offer. A word of warning to the over-21s among us: it’s hard to get a liquor license in New Jersey, so many of the below are BYOB (bring your own beer/booze.) If you’re the kind of person who usually peruses the drinks menu, check in advance to avoid disappointment.

Osteria Procaccini is a cosy pizza place in nearby Kingston (a 10 minute drive) serving “fancier” options—think artichoke hearts or clams—at reasonable prices. For the best experience, go with friends and share a couple of pies; the arugula & prosciutto and sausage & truffle oil are two of my personal favorites. Many of their ingredients are local and/or organic, and it’s worth looking beyond pizza for their excellent salad options (try the buratta or the beets with goat cheese) and desserts. Nutella pizza, anyone? Warning: they don’t take reservations, so be prepared to wait a few minutes for a table, especially if you’re a big group. Call ahead to check how busy they are.

One53 is a French-inspired bistro in Rocky Hill (a 15 minute drive) that has a little more of an upscale feel. The menu changes according to what’s in season, so check online before you go to start planning your choices. A consistently good option is their Rossini burger, served with crispy fries and truffle mayonnaise, and if they have the chocolate-caramel bread pudding, don’t think twice. They’re also open for lunch a few days a week, where the options focus more on gourmet sandwiches. If you happen to be in the area on a day when One53 is closed for lunch, check out the Rocky Hill Inn—their pork belly sandwich is a winner.

While I’ve taken my foodie parents everywhere on this list with good results, sometimes you want a safe bet. Blue Point Grill is within walking distance of campus and serves the best seafood in the area—you’d be wise to make a reservation a few days in advance to snag a table. All of their fresh fish options are great, but sometimes during long Princeton winters the steamed mussels or lobster bisque are just what hits the spot.

If you’re a sushi lover in Princeton, you’re in luck: there are three good options to suit whatever kind of experience you’re craving. First up is Sushi Palace, (a ten minute drive from campus) home of the $24 all you can eat deal (even cheaper on weekdays) that gives you the option of endless (surprisingly good) sushi, sashimi, tempura, noodles, and even ice cream.

If you’re on the run or don’t have a car and want value sushi to go, Sakura Express on Witherspoon Street is a decent option. It’s low on décor and atmosphere (you order and pay first then wait for your food at communal tables) but the portions are substantial, so don’t do what my mom did and order appetizers to go with your combo main. We were left with a mountain of steaming tempura that even I couldn’t finish.

However, if you’re a sushi snob, there’s only one place you should even think of going: Ajihei is a tiny basement-level place on Chambers Street that serves sushi that rivals that of top restaurants in New York or London. The fish is fresh and perfectly prepared, and it’s impossible to go wrong—that is, unless you break one of Chef Koji Kitamura’s rules. Parties of over four people are not allowed, and neither is birthday cake or hard alcohol. Happily, the dining experience more than makes up for any eccentricity. If you’re into spice (or have a sinus infection) don’t miss the wasabi shumai—they pack a tear-inducing punch.

There comes a point in every semester where you’ve had enough of dining hall/eating club food but don’t have time for a sit-down meal. That’s ok, and Olives is here to help. Located nearby on Witherspoon Street, this deli is basically a Princeton institution, serving a variety of hot options, salads and sandwiches. When they have it, their steak chimichurri salad is unbeatable, especially taken to go and eaten on the lawn in front of Nassau Hall on a sunny day.

Forget what you’ve heard. Thomas Sweet’s is overrated. The Bent Spoon is quirky but too expensive for a frequent treat. Where you really want to go to get your ice cream fix is Halo Pub. Besides the seemingly hundreds of pictures of cows hung up around the place, they also have some of the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. The milk they use is locally sourced and growth hormone free, and they have over forty-five flavors—plus, it’s incredibly cheap. Sometimes when things are rough I just need a scoop of vanilla heath bar with hot fudge, and the world seems like a better place.
