.Academics: Chemical engineering here at Syracuse isn't talked about as much as Newhouse or aerospace engineering here at Syracuse, but the department is very well known and very opportunistic for it's students for the future. There are many research opportunities that one can take advantage of here for the major, and there are a variety of opportunities you can take advantage of for internships and jobs after you graduate as long as you talk to the career services office at the college. So far, the teachers and other classmates have been very friendly and enjoyable to be around, and I feel like I truly am learning something here.
.Academics: I am a chemical engineering student here at the university, and I must say the engineering school's academic quality is fantastic. I feel adequately challenged doing the work I need to get done in order to learn the material I need to know for my future profession. The classes and faculty I've had and met with so far have been really friendly and informative about the actual program, and even though the work can be hard sometimes, I still love my major and want to continue my dreams of either going into industry or going into patent law. I also minor in political science, and the faculty in the political science department has been extremely nice and informative to me too, and the political classes I've taken, like international relations, has been very interesting, and I highly recommend them.
.Academics: My time in the public communications school (Newhouse) has been great! So many professors, alumni and students there have great connections in the media industry. It makes the prospects for living/working in a city like NYC much more feasible! That being said, the workload can be pretty heavy. You definitely have to be willing to put time in out of class because the projects get pretty involved and end up becoming the bulk of your portfolio.
.Majors: The chemical engineering department at Syracuse has been extremely enjoyable to be a part of because of the upside the program has， and the encouragement by the faculty to pursuit and continue your personal goals you want to accomplish with a future degree in the program. The curriculum can make you feel very busy sometimes, but that is meant to help you make sure you have learned the material you need to learn in order to be a successful chemical engineer in the future.
.Majors: Getting into the chemical engineering program isn't as hard as you would think it would be. Many people feel like it must be so much harder to get into the school, and even though I do believe it is harder to get into the engineering school, it's not by any means impossible to get into. I got a 26 on my ACT and 1780 on my SAT, a 3.78 GPA with a decent amount of extracurricular activities on my resume from being a school ambassador to robotics club and physics club to chorus. However, I feel the essay portion of the application is what got me into Syracuse. My academic background from my high school really isn't that impressive, but I feel I wrote fantastic essays for the university, and I firmly believe they look at your letters and see what kind of person you are and will evaluate their decision if you are a borderline decision. Therefore, if you feel like you're a borderline student for the engineering school or any of the other schools in general, feel very confident in what you have accomplished thus far, and feel assured that there's a great chance you can get in the school as long as you show that you are very passionate in what you want to do in the future and work extremely hard to get whatever you need to get done.
.Majors: Syracuse has a lot of top programs in the nation. The School of Communications, Business School, School of Citizenship, are all top contenders and you definitely get your money's worth.
.Diversity: I've met and seen millions of international students from all over the globe (mainly from China), and there are millions of ways international students can get involved and meet other international students around campus. In just the US, most of the students here are from the northeast or from California, but there are still a ton of people like me (from Alabama) that come from other places around the country.
.Diversity: The campus is very diverse, but I know some racial and sexual minority groups do not feel entirely accepted. That's not to say that everyone in these groups feels unaccepted, but some students do, and are participating in movements on campus to make it better.
.Diversity: This university is extremely accepting of students of all shapes, sizes, colors, backgrounds, and ideologies. There are dozens of organizations that cater to minority groups of all kinds. Most students are very accepting, but there are a few who will still pass judgement onto others.
.Athletics: The Orange sports teams are always the most popular thing on campus! Our football team is just average, but they're still extremely fun to go to, and all of the basketball games are extremely fun to go to even if the Orange lose. All of our sports teams do extremely well in their respective sports, and going to any of them is never a waste of your time. In fact, it's a waste of your time most of the time to not go to the games!
.Athletics: School spirit is huge. If you're at cuse you go big or go home. If one of our teams is really advancing then this mentality just grows and grows and youll see cuse fans go nuts. Sports are a big deal but if you're like me who doesn't know much about them then you can avoid, but they're still a large part of campus.
.Campus Food: There are many dining options available on campus that use either a meal plan or your SUID Food account. Of all the on campus dining halls, I've eaten in Ernie Davis, Sadler, and Graham. All of the dining halls have set food that are always available such as the salad bar, fruit bar, gluten free section, vegetarian options, hamburgers, pizza etc. The main food line's menu changes daily and typically serves chicken, pasta, pork, meatloaf, grilled cheese, vegetables, potatoes, etc on a set schedule. There will be days that are better than others in terms of options; however, overall, there are many dining options available and the quality of the food throughout the dining halls I've been in has been very good. If you don't have a meal plan, you can use your the money on your SUID food account to buy food at Kimmel dining hall, Schine, and all of the on campus cafes that are located in several academic buildings throughout main campus. It's very convenient if you don't have time to swing by a cafeteria on your way to class. The quality of the food in the cafe's are also good, though there isn't as much variety as the cafeteria and the menu doesn't change daily.
.Campus Food: On campus food can be really really good on occasion! The best options are probably Shaw and Ernie Davis dining halls, and I've heard Sadler is really good! There are many other options for food and coffee, such as Shine and Goldstein student centers, that have food places like Sbarro, Dunkin Donuts, and Burger King that you can use your dining dollars from your meal plan. Other popular places around campus are Bird Library cafe for coffee and other sandwiches and Slocum cafe for sandwiches. Marshall Street also has many options for people, like Insomnia Cookies (excellent) and Calios (also excellent), and plenty of other Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks in the area. Many of these places also deliver to the dorms for late-night dining!
.Campus Housing: Living on campus is great. Freshman year I lived in Shaw Hall and loved it. The renovations made my first year living in the dorms very comfortable and I felt at home. Its close proximity to all my classes is the number one reason why I loved living in Shaw and the food in the dining hall.
.Campus Housing: Living on campus at Syracuse University is an interesting experience. Depending on the location of your dorm though, this experience varies. I was lucky enough to live in a dorm that was close to the academic buildings as well as the social scene on campus. Also, it was not a freshman only dorm which I think was better. We had more independence and I felt my floormates were more mature. Additionally, I got lucky when it came to room type and roommate. Activities and day-to-day interactions really made this dorm feel like home.
.Guys & Girls: Really attractive people at this school. Most are wealthy so there is a lot of designer clothes. You won't feel left out if you don't have designer clothes but just know most other students will. Everyone is heavily into partying here girls and guys and pretty much no one does relationships, just lots and lots of hook ups.
.Guys & Girls: There are many good looking people on SU's campus who take great care of themselves. Students are active in eating healthy as much as they can and exercise often and frequently. Guys tend to be selfish and can sometimes get high on their horses. Everyone is pretty nice and friendly on campus.
.Administration: The administration is generally very lenient about just about everything while living in your dorms. You just can't raise too much hell or else the RA's will tell you to stop and will write you up if necessary. The RA's are strict enough though and don't let things get too out of hand. Regarding leniency towards partying, however, the university has become more strict due to the ranking of the university as #1 party school. Early on the year, parties were being shut down very early on, and that still usually is the case. The fraternities don't have many open parties for Non-Greek students, but house parties off campus usually don't get stopped that early.
.Administration: I have never been subject to any consequences of strict rules. The only thing I have encountered: the school is serious about room checks. They come around periodically to check dorms and South Campus apartments, and if you have any lighting that violates the rules or any candles, they will confiscate them. If you have any drugs or alcohol you will be subject to judiciary action.
.Health & Safety: I always feel safe walking around during the daytime on and off campus, however into the night it gets much more worrisome. Even on campus it can be scary to walk alone especially because of the amounts of violence on and close to campus. We get way too many emails about safety issues.
.Health & Safety: Our Department of Public Safety always has the best interest of students in mind. But, recently with the #1 party school ranking, they've grown more concerned with shutting down loud parties that aren't necessarily dangerous than responding quickly to violent acts happening on campus.
.Health & Safety: The campus itself is really safe, I feel comfortable any time of the day but the surroundings are not the best and some places around campus are really creepy. I never walk alone at night. DPS is everywhere and there's a light system connected to the security center so you never feel unsafe.
.Transportation: There usually always a bus that goes to the mall or downtown. I never had a problem with transportation and my college usually provides transportation for students going to the airport during breaks.
.Transportation: The Zipcar program is something I have never experienced, but I see many people with them and I think it's a wonderful program to have. The campus shuttle is very convenient and I enjoy that it also goes to the downtown area.
.Local Area: Destiny USA is the sixth-largest mall in America so there are plenty of options when it comes to shopping and even restaurants. Outside of the heart of campus there are a few cute areas like the Westcott District where local bands and even some big-name artists come to play. Safety is one of the downsides of living in Syracuse. Though campus police have a good control on students' safety, you definitely can't be out late by yourself in the area around campus and especially not downtown Syracuse.
